Planning a Family Reunion

March 22, 2017

With today’s technology, we have more communication methods than ever before. However, for many, things such as texting, social media messaging and email has taken the place of face-to-face interaction. If it’s been awhile since you and your extended family have gotten together, now is the perfect time to start considering planning a family reunion. While each family and their circumstances are different, there are a few universal tips you can use to help make the process as easy as possible. You need a plan and helpers. From finding a date and location that works for the majority to deciding on the specifics such as food, activities, etc., planning a family reunion can be daunting. Make it easier on yourself by recruiting others to help you and making a plan and sticking to it. Professionals recommend beginning planning at least 12 months in advance and getting input from others where through conversation or questionnaires to get an idea of when, where and what activities spark the most interest. Make a budget. Determine how you are going to pay for the event and how much you are willing to spend on each component then stick to it. Keep in mind to leave a little extra for unexpected expenses. Spread the word. While you don’t want to give away every detail, you do want to make sure guests know the important things like when, where and cost. You’ll also want to make sure that they have enough information about what to expect to pique their interest and make them want to come. Consider setting up a private social media group or email list to share information and facilitate conversation among everyone. Remember why you are there. You’re family, which is a special bond. Remember to incorporate that into the event by through the food selection, the décor, and the music. Also, take the opportunity while you have everyone together to continue your family’s story by taking photos and video. Maintain the momentum. Once the reunion is over, plan to keep in touch with everyone until the next one through newsletters, social media, email, websites and the good old fashioned telephone. The group sales staff at Trout Lodge would love to help you plan your next family reunion. Give us a call today at 888-FUN-YMCA or email
