Staying active in the winter

Are cold weather and shorter days keeping you inside? If so, now is the time to get off the couch and get outdoors! Being outside is crucial to your overall health. Sunlight and exercise have been shown to prevent colds, improve overall mood and energy levels and give you the dose of Vitamin D your body needs. Here are a few ideas to get you up and moving. Take a walk. This is one of the quickest and easiest ways to get your blood pumping. It doesn’t have to be a long walk. Even just a quick walk to the end of the block and back while really focusing on breathing in the fresh air will provide added benefits especially if done regularly. Play a game with your kids. When was the last time you used the basketball goal in the driveway or played a game of tag? Simple as it sounds games are a great way to get moving, fire up those competitive juices and reconnect as a family. Do yard work. Now we aren’t recommending you start mulching or planting flowers when winter is probably not done with us. But you can do small things such as raking leftover leaves, moving any debris that has fallen or cleaning off your patio or deck to see what you’d like to do with it for spring. Try something new.
