Why Camp Matters

November 18, 2015

The weather is getting colder. Leaves are falling off the trees, the days are shorter and Christmas carols are slowly making their way into stores. The last thing on your mind is camp. But here at YMCA, we never stop thinking about camp! We work tirelessly all year long to make sure our summer camp (and our winter camp) is perfect. Because camp changes people. It forms campers into the people they want to be. And the people they know they can be. Here are just a few of the reasons that we think camp may be one of the most important things your child will ever do: Campers try new adventures Plain and simple, they’re going to get chances for adventure at camp that they wouldn’t get anywhere else. Plus, they’re surrounded by safe havens. They’ll get to conquer fears and ask questions and learn skills and explore the world like they never have before, and we love being a part of that discovery. Campers meet people who are different from them Adversity is something that kids are going to come across in their lives. Camp gives them a safe space to learn about others and share things about themselves, too. Differences are not something to be exploited, but explored and we create an environment for that to happen; then we believe in our campers to teach their peers the same understanding and empathy outside of camp. Campers find role models Our camp counselors are trained to handle everything, from emotional to medical problems. We staff our facilities with kind, responsible people because these are the people that campers learn from. Teenagers or adults who choose to spend their summers helping kids learn and grow—those are the people you want your kids to look up to. Campers learn to be themselves All of these things add up to a confident, self-aware child. When you take a child and surround them with support and opportunity, they’ll rise to the occasion. They’ll feel safe enough to take risks and express themselves. And at camp, they’ll find that they’re accepted for exactly who they are. That’s why we do what we do. We strive to create confident kids. You can register for Summer Camp 2016 today, but if you simply cannot wait, check out our Winter Camp!
